The Phlebotomy Short Course is a single course AHE242 (Basic Blood Collection Techniques). It consists of laboratory training by professional laboratory personnel and develops skills for basic blood drawing, whether for healthcare professionals or those wishing to learn phlebotomy skills as a complement to additional laboratory training.
The course is two credits and consists of 28 hours (8 lecture and 20 lab practice). It is scheduled every quarter (summer, fall, winter, spring) on Saturdays for five weeks. Topics include:
- Job aspects and duties
- Blood collection supplies
- Laboratory safety
- Blood collection procedures
- Quality assurance
- Legal aspects
- Professional licensure
- Interpersonal relations
- Job interviewing
By the end of the course, students:
- Develop basic blood drawing skills by classroom practice
- Develop an understanding of basic laboratory testing as relevant to blood specimen collection
Students must place into ENGL&101 on a placement test or show proof of completion of ENGL&101 in order to take the class.
