The phlebotomy technician draws quality blood samples from patients or blood donors and prepares those specimens for medical testing. The technician must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and reliable manner. The phlebotomy program at NSCC provides exceptional training for students who wish to acquire this specialized high-demand skill.

Work Environment
- Hospitals, laboratories, physician's offices, donation facilities and other healthcare settings where blood is taken and analyzed (majority of jobs in hospitals)
- Calm lab environments as well as interaction with stressed patients
- Day, evening or night shifts in large hospitals/independent labs that operate continuously, some weekends or holidays.
- Rotating shifts in smaller facilities. Emergency calls some nights/weekends
Job Responsibilities
- Explaining procedures to patients
- Drawing blood and applying pressure or bandages after blood is drawn
- Taking blood pressure, pulse and respiration readings
- Updating patient records
- Preparing stains and reagents
- Cleaning and sterilizing equipment
- Sending blood, urine and fecal samples to the lab for testing
